Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I am a registered Pet Partners therapy dog. I am a Redbone Coonhound Yellow Lab Mix and I am five years old. I weigh in at fifty five pounds. My Mom and I have been a Pet Partner Team since 2011. My job as a therapy dog is to make friends and help people feel happy.
Part of my training is that I am also a registered Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.). One of the places I currently visit is the Richland County Library in Ballentine. My job at the library is to work with children of all ages and reading abilities.
I like children to practice and demonstrate that reading is FUN! I listen attentively, don’t judge, laugh or criticize anyone who is reading to me. I allow children to proceed at their own pace and I am less intimidating than their peers. My mom says that the children who read to me build self-esteem, confidence, and social skills. The children really love it when I turn the pages of their books with my nose; they usually giggle and hug me!
I patiently listen to the kindergarten children read their basic primers. Because I am non-judgmental, the children’s self-confidence and reading fluency is boosted. In addition, I am able to correctly identify 50+ basic kindergarten and first grade sight words! The students love to challenge me to see who knows the most words!
Our visits to the kindergarten are a win-win each week!
I hope you have a “paws-itively” wonderful day! I would love to have others join me as a Reading Education Assistance Dog or doing other fun therapy visits.
