My pup and I are new to the Columbia area, so I want to introduce ourselves! I’m Laura and I’m an engineer at SCDOT. After graduating from Clemson University and working in the upstate in road construction and asphalt paving, I decided to take a position in Columbia. I am excited to see so many Pet Therapy opportunities in the Columbia area!
Abbie was at the Greenville Humane Society before I found her (or she found me, depending on your point of view). I adopted her in October of 2012 when she was just 7 months old. (Her birthday is March 16, 2012.) She has been a sweet, loving, fun companion since the day I brought her home and I don’t know what I would do without her wagging tail to come home to!
Abbie is a “pound pup mutt” AKA “designer dog”! We were able to track down her birthday, but her dad is laying low so her breed blend is up in the air. She was labeled a Boykin spaniel, but she’s gotten lots of votes for being part lab as well. She was surrendered only a few days before I adopted her, so we were meant to be best buddies!
She has enjoyed her new home and loves sitting at the top of the hill in the backyard to keep an eye on everything that moves: squirrels, birds and leaves! She is an awesome running buddy and has done a few 5Ks. She even got her photo in the newspaper for running the Greenville Humane Society Mutt Strut 5K with me (check out the photo taken after the race).
Abbie enjoys all outside activities from hiking to swimming to frisbee to playing with her dog friends to just lying on the porch. She is very smart and has learned lots of tricks which she loves to show off; sit, get low, rollover, shake, other hand, high ten, stand, jump, back up, wave, hug, and kiss. She knows what ‘treat’ means and gets very excited! I think her favorite ‘trick’ is disassembling her squeaky toys.
Since the beginning, Abbie has been great with all sorts of people; neighborhood kids, grandparents, new friends and old. I realized that she would make a great therapy dog; her personality is friendly and happy. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity with Abbie when a friend told me about a program that brought therapy dogs to the hospital where he was working. I checked it out, took the steps to become a Pet Therapy Team, and the rest is history!
We are looking forward to visiting lots of different places in the Columbia area. Abbie is such a sweet girl; I know you’ll love having her around your residents, patients, staff, and everyone else! Since I work full time, we’d love to visit you in the evenings or on weekends.
